The driving test was introduced in the UK in 1935 and the only test of the driver’s theory knowledge were a few questions about the Highway Code and other motoring matters at the end of the practical test. *** The theory testing has now changed and since 1st July 1996 all driving test candidates must also pass a theory test. As of the 1st January 1997 all learners must pass the theory test before applying for the practical driving test. *** As of 4th January 2000 the theory test changed to an IT-based test which uses a touch screen computer system and provides a same day result service . *** To evaluate each learner drivers skill at recognising hazards on the road, the “Hazard Perception” test was added to the theory Test on November 14th 2002. *** On September 1st 2003 another addition was made to the practical test. At the beginning of the test the examiner asks the candidate two questions about their vehicle. These questions can range from how to check the lights, tyres, brakes or use of the horn through to lifting the bonnet and identifying various fluid reservoirs and their level indicators. These questions were updated on July 1st 2008, you may find all the current questions at http://www.dsa.gov.uk . *** Attitude is a major factor in determining the qualities of a good driver. Amongst the other qualities of a safe and competent driver are self discipline, patience and the ability to deal safely with any problem encountered on the road. Confidence to deal with these problems can only be acquired from practical driving skills and depth of knowledge. . *** For all up-to-date DSA information relating to changes to pricing and booking theory tests and practical driving tests, please visit *** And finally, ponder this extract from the Highway Code… .. The rules in The Highway Code do not give you the right of way in any circumstance, but they advise you when you should give way to others. Always give way if it can help to avoid an accident.
